Abstract

The issue of the inclusion of reprehensible opinion in the interpretation of the Holy Qur’an is a significant matter that necessitates critical thought, particularly regarding interpretations influenced by whims, sectarian fanaticism, and misguided tendencies. This study aims to define the concept of criticism in interpretation and to elucidate the approach of Abdullah bin Al-Siddiq Al-Ghumari in criticizing heretical interpretations. Using a descriptive-analytical approach, the study collects Al-Ghumārī’s criticisms of erroneous interpretations of Surah al-Baqarah from his book "Bidā’u al-Tafasīr," analyzing and classifying them according to foundations and fields, and explaining his critical methodology. The findings reveal that the concept of criticism in interpretation, as applied by commentators, primarily involves highlighting weak narrations and rejected sayings in explaining the Qur’anic verses. However, commentators often limit their criticism to pointing out weaknesses and errors without addressing other aspects of the criticism process. The study also demonstrates that Al-Ghumārī employs an analytical and critical approach towards heretical interpretations. He critiques narrations and interpretive sayings that contradict the wording of the verse, its parsing, the context of the speech, the reason for the revelation, or that clash with other evidence. His criticism is characterized by accuracy, brevity, and clarity. Al-Ghumārī’s critiques are based on foundations such as the Qur’an, Hadith, doctrine, and other relevant fields.
